ARTHUR SILBER: To Honor the Value of a Single Life: The First Murder

http://powerofnarrative.blogspot.com/2012/11/to-honor-value-of-single-life-first.html

We live in a culture drenched with cruelty, violence and blood. From our earliest days as children, we are taught to hate those who are not like us. We learn that compassion and empathy are signs of weakness, and failings to be viewed with contempt. By the time we are adults, most people have internalized these lessons completely. They refuse even to question them.
We will occasionally acknowledge, but only hesitantly and with great reluctance, that our honored authority figures make mistakes. But even when they make mistakes, we always insist that they "meant well," that they had "good intentions." Their inherent, axiomatic goodness may not be questioned.
