Dear Friend,
Osama bin Laden is dead, but President Obama just signed an agreement that could leave American troops in Afghanistan for another 12 years, and the War on Terror is still being used as an excuse to strip Americans of our constitutional rights.
But this week, members of Congress will try to get the House to vote on both of these issues as amendments to a major, "must pass" military spending bill called the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
Multiple amendments will be offered to more quickly end the occupation of Afghanistan. They all deserve our support, as does an amendment that will be offered by Reps. Adam Smith and Justin Amash to prohibit the indefinite military detention of Americans without charge or trial — a shocking assault on our civil liberties authorized in last year's NDAA.
Neither of these should be partisan issues — the war in Afghanistan is increasingly unpopular across the board. And indefinite military detention cuts to the core of our rights as Americans and whether we will live in a country governed by the Rule of Law.
Whether or not you think your member of Congress is likely to vote the right way on these issues, we need you to make a call.
Members of Congress who are with us need to know their constituents support them. And those who are not with us need to know their constituents are paying attention and will hold them accountable for voting the wrong way.
A vote is scheduled for this week, so call today.
