RICHARD DAWKINS - Appetite for Wonder

"By all means let's be open-minded, but not so open-minded that our brains drop out." Richard Dawkins

Despite great advances in the fields of science and technology, the human race seems to be paradoxically predisposed to unwavering belief in illogical, unverifiable and destructive superstitions. Most self-confessed 'rational' human beings will balk at the idea of witches and voodoo curses, of Zeus with his lightning bolts and Thor with his mighty hammer, but at the same time and in the same breath will assert the reality and continuing presence of a creative force of uncanny intelligence and inexplicable moral wisdom – for whose existence there isn't even the slightest shred of scientific evidence.

GT sez:

Our minds cannot conceive the concept of god. So why do we argue so much about it?

All you have to do to prove this is true is ask yourself what is on the outside of the universe as we describe it.

Okay.

Now ask yourself what is on the outside of that?

Okay.

Now ask yourself what is on the outside of that?

Okay.

And on and on...infinitum.

Your mind cannot conceive of what's on the outside of whatever you think is the last 'outside'.

Your mind has a limit to what it can conceive and understand. When it reaches that limit, it can either accept its limit or delve into belief of the unproven and/or superstition.

How about we all just calm down and love one another and help one another to live peacefully side by side with enough for each of us to sustain a healthy and productive life doing what each of us is capable of doing and contributing to the whole of humanity instead of stealing from one another and spending our lives accumulating more than we need to survive and live healthly and comfortably.

There has always been enough for all of us if we just take care of one another and exhibit the one admirable human quality of charity to the less fortunate among us. That is what truly defines a healthy society.
