The chip (mark) would represent your giving up your personal control over your life to outsiders.
It would not have to have anything to do with religion unless you need
to believe the part about being relegated to an existence in a hell of
your own imagining if you do accept the chip (mark).
Nor would it have to necessarily guarantee you an after life with Jesus
(God) or whatever religious figure you believe in because you refused
the chip (mark).
It would merely be your giving up your control over your life to the
powers that exist outside your skin that would dictate what you could
consume.
As to those people in the film who think that they are consuming goods
for free, someone produced those goods/food at the cost of their labor
and financial inputs.
Even if those producers had to throw away what they produced there was
still a value in those goods/food that those who think what they are
consuming is free are not recognizing.
If there were no goods being produced at some cost whether of labor or
other financial asset, what would those consumers looking to consume for
free obtain?
There would be nothing.
Therefore, if you want to consume, you need to exchange something you
value (like your labor either directly or indirectly, as in a job for
pay) for the goods/food you want to consume.
Or, you would have to produce the goods/food yourself by applying your
labor and ingenuity if you weren't going to obtain the necessary inputs
of production by purchasing them.
If you don't do this then you consume nothing and eventually you die from starvation and/or exposure to the elements.
This entire movie was loaded with loopholes and omissions relating to reality.
